The appointment of new coordinators coincided with PNI’s initiative to transition from PFGE to whole genome sequencing (WGS) for enteric bacterial outbreak investigation and surveillance in the Asia-Pacific region.

While PFGE has been a valuable tool in public health surveillance, WGS offers some key advantages. This includes the generation of comprehensive data with increased precision which allows for broader application of data. Higher discrimination and standardisation of data generation and analysis allows for improved surveillance and outbreak detection leading to better public health response.
