New Zealand is a foundation member of PulseNet Asia Pacific. Activities in New Zealand are coordinated by The Institute of Environmental Science and Research ( ESR(external link)). ESR is a crown research institute responsible for notifiable disease surveillance, reference and public health laboratories, and many aspects of food and water microbiology.

Key organisms and techniques

New Zealand is using PulseNet PFGE methodology for Campylobacter, Salmonella, E. coli O157, Listeria, and Yersinia. MLVA has also been used for S. Typhimurium and E. coli O157.
